THE HIGH LEVEL
The Patient Safety Specialist will implement and maintain processes that minimize risk to patient safety. The role will partner with software development teams in support of VHA Office of Connected Care.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Develop and implement a patient safety assessment process for applications developed by the VHA Office of Connected Care
- Research a variety of Patient Safety programs, applicable policies and guidance from the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS), and prior patient safety reviews to inform processes and provide assessments to teams
- Develop, maintain, and train others on processes and best practices for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Healthcare Failure and Effects Mode Analysis (HFEMA)
- Conduct initial investigation of all potential patient safety events and provide summaries and recommendations, tracking related actions to completion
- Establish administrative controls aimed at ensuring approved recommendations from completed investigations and RCAs are implemented as proposed
- Compile information on patient safety concerns and provide recommendations
- Attend meetings with product and cross-functional teams and provide input on patient safety initiatives and findings
- Serve as a subject matter expert and consultant in the field of patient safety
- Play a pivotal role in the development, quality control, and regulation of application development and continued support
- Maintain professional knowledge and skills based on currently published or communicated information through reading, workshop, use of benchmarking practices, etc.
- Translate applicable policies, theories, and strategies into action within the complex interrelationships that exist related to patient safety and software development
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
- You’ve managed a patient safety program and/or been a high-level advisor.
- You have at least 7 years of related professional experience, with a minimum of 3 years in patient safety, risk management, and/or quality control.
- You have experience with patient safety reviews related to technical/IT projects or products.
- You possess strong emotional intelligence, enabling you to tailor your communication style and convey concepts across interdisciplinary teams.
- You are passionate about patient safety and risk management, and actively maintain knowledge of related policies, procedures, best practices, and current events.
- You have experience in at least one of the following (the more, the better): Veteran’s Health Administration, telehealth, software development, consulting.
- You have excellent presentation skills to include building slide decks and effective communication with executive leadership.
- You have demonstrated ability to work with multiple cross-functional teams at one time.
- You are proficient in use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Word (even better if you have experience with software development tools such as Jira).
- You have a bachelor’s degree, and preferably also a master’s and/or applicable certifications in a related field; clinical credentials (e.g. RN) are a plus.

- This position is fully remote, with up to 5% travel.
