Minimum Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license; BSN preferred.
  • 3+ years of recent clinical experience in acute care, case management, utilization management, or a related clinical specialty.
  • Experience conducting clinical prior authorization reviews across multiple service categories including medical/surgical procedures, diagnostic imaging, durable medical equipment (DME), specialty therapies, devices, and related utilization management areas.
  • Strong understanding of clinical documentation, medical terminology, and evidence-based practice.
  • Experience applying guideline-based criteria such as InterQual, MCG, or similar utilization management frameworks.
  • Ability to interpret medical records and determine clinical appropriateness using structured clinical criteria.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and healthcare technology platforms.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations, data privacy requirements, and patient information handling standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including clinical operations, data science, product, and technology teams.
  • Experience with clinical data annotation, data labeling, healthcare analytics, AI/ML workflows, or related technologies.
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging healthcare technologies and artificial intelligence applications.

About the Job

The Registered Nurse Clinical Annotator plays a critical role in the development of artificial intelligence solutions designed to improve and automate prior authorization and utilization management processes. Leveraging clinical expertise, this role reviews, interprets, annotates, and validates medical documentation to ensure AI systems are trained using accurate, clinically relevant, and policy-compliant datasets.

This position collaborates with clinical, operational, product, and data science teams to support the creation of high-quality AI solutions that enhance decision-making, efficiency, and clinical accuracy.

As a senior clinical subject matter expert, the individual may review the work of others, contribute innovative approaches, provide mentorship, and serve as a trusted resource for annotation best practices and clinical interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Review medical records and interpret clinical documentation using sound clinical judgment.
  • Annotate, categorize, and label healthcare data according to established guideline-based criteria.
  • Ensure annotation accuracy, consistency, and alignment with utilization management guidelines and medical policies.
  • Support the development of high-quality clinical datasets for AI training and validation.
  • Identify documentation gaps, inconsistencies, and ambiguities and escalate issues when appropriate.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of annotation standards, clinical rules, and workflow processes.
  • Collaborate with data science, clinical operations, and product teams to ensure clinical accuracy and operational relevance.
  • Support quality assurance, testing, and validation activities for AI-enabled utilization management tools.
  • Document annotation decisions, rationale, and guideline interpretations clearly and consistently.
  • Maintain compliance with clinical, ethical, regulatory, and privacy standards, including HIPAA requirements.
  • Serve as a mentor, subject matter expert, and resource for team members when needed.
