About the job
About Knight Cancer Advising
Knight Cancer Advising (KCA) is an independent oncology advisory founded and led by Andrew Knight, MD, a board-certified Radiation Oncologist with 20 years of clinical experience. We work with patients and families facing a serious cancer diagnosis on diagnostic interpretation, treatment strategy, specialist selection, and access to emerging research and clinical trials. Caseload is deliberately limited, which allows every case to receive sustained attention. Our mission is to ensure that each of our clients is provided with the most complete and rigorous individualized analysis for their case, as well as access to the leading specialists and most advanced treatments available anywhere in the world.
About the role
KCA is seeking a Clinician Advisor to work directly with Dr. Knight and the advisory team managing individual cases and defining and refining our case management processes.
The role requires outstanding communication skills covering complex information, as well as exceptional compassion and attention to detail.
Key responsibilities
The Clinician Advisor combines three functions: project management for active cases, case management for select cases, and client intake and records coordination.
Project management
- Serve as the operational anchor for active engagements: gather medical records and coordinate scheduling, imaging access, and meeting logistics from intake through case closure.
- Establish and manage the project plan for each client engagement, including tasks and deliverables across the team, and track completion against schedule.
- Define meeting objectives, draft agendas, and send them to the client and the assigned advisor.
- Record background information from the kickoff meeting, manage resulting reminders, and stay copied on client communications so nothing is missed between sessions.
- Set up and troubleshoot client imaging access with clients and hospitals, and screen incoming medical records, flagging clinical relevant issues.
- Complete post-meeting recap and to-do documentation, and run the weekly case review.
- Field and triage unscheduled client communication between meetings, escalating clinical items to the appropriate advisor.
- Track responses to physician-to-physician outreach and draft periodic updates to a client’s primary care or referring physician for the supervising advisor’s review and approval.
- Coordinate scan and imaging scheduling directly with radiology departments and other outside providers.
- Log and track each new referral’s source and channel, flag upcoming renewal dates, and handle offboarding administration when an engagement ends.
- Complete rush or expedited third-party paperwork, coordinate multi-party appointments, and support clients navigating records and administrative processes.
Case management
- Serve as case manager for select client engagements under the supervising physician’s oversight.
- Set the topic, priority, and pace of research questions for assigned cases, and review completed research briefs.
- Review and approve draft client-facing research summaries before they are sent, for cases managed at this level.
- Lead standing client meetings and monthly check-in calls for assigned clients, including delivering the monthly review of relevant clinical research.
- Present assigned cases at the weekly case review with the supervising physician.
- Escalate clinical judgment calls, treatment-plan questions, or case complexity beyond scope to the supervising physician.
Client intake and records coordination
- Manage inbound intake logistics for new clients: respond to emails, schedule initial calls, request medical records, and open the client record.
- Determine and set up each new client’s records-access approach at the start of engagement.
Qualifications
Candidates are evaluated on oncology experience and clinical judgment rather than a fixed credential path. Any of the following backgrounds would be considered, provided the other qualifications below are met:
- Nurse Practitioner with an AOCNP® (Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner) credential, or 3 to 5 years of dedicated medical oncology experience.
- Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP) or Family NP (FNP) with at least 3 to 5 years of dedicated medical oncology or Phase I to III trial coordination experience.
- Physician Assistant with an NCCPA Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Oncology, or substantial tenure within an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Other Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant backgrounds with significant, demonstrable oncology experience will also be considered.
Additional qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and comfort working in an advisory capacity with patients and families, which is distinct from a traditional clinical encounter.
- Self-starter capable of managing multiple complex workflows simultaneously in a small, fast-growing, entrepreneurial practice.
- Sound clinical judgment, including the ability to identify gaps or discrepancies in incoming medical records and flag them appropriately, while deferring final treatment recommendations and client-facing clinical decisions to the supervising physician.
- Comfortable beginning in a training and shadowing capacity, sitting in on calls, meetings, and case discussions during onboarding, before progressing to independent case management, typically within six to nine months.
